My name is Melvin Walden I am a Professional Hairstylist living on the tropical island of Singapore. I enjoy my work as I find that working with hair is a great medium for artistic expression. My Philosophy – It’s all about making people happy and feeling good about themselves. Looking after your hair should always be uncomplicated, effortless and enjoyable.
Water can ruin your hair color. As an expat living in a tropical climate keeping that beautiful hair color you left the hair salon with is not an easy task.
Due to the heat and humidity. Washing your hair every day or even a couple of times a day can and quite often becomes the norm. Especially if you live a very active life style and exercise or spend a lot of your time outdoors.
Moving into a condominium with a swimming pool on your doorstep can mean cooling off with a little recreational swimming on a daily basis. Long weekends spent exploring the multitude of tropical beaches. Can mean your hair is in the seas salt water for long periods of time.
All of these activities can and will play havoc with your hair color.
Water Survival 7 Tips That Will Help Preserve Your Hair Color.
Tip 1. Don’t Shampoo So Often.
Colored hair tends to become porous. The hair will absorb and release water easily. As the water exits it takes some color molecules along with it.
Tip 2. Tap Water Contains Chlorine.
Here in Singapore the tap water contains a lot of chlorine so as to kill bacteria. But remember that it is also a mild bleaching agent. That will create a mild bleaching effect on your colored hair.
It is best to try and extend the time between shampoos. Use a dry shampoo when your scalp feels oily but your hair is in fact clean.
Tip 3. Turn The Heat Down.
Turn the heat of the water down. Yes wash your hair with luke warm or cool water. Heat makes your hair color seep out faster. The hotter the water the quicker the fade.
Tip 4. Light Blonde Hair Green Hue.
Constant swimming in your swimming pool can lead to a greenish tinge on very light blonde hair. This is not due to chlorine. But to deposits of copper minerals in the water that attach themselves to your hair.
Once spotted a dollop of tomato sauce mixed in with your shampoo on your next wash should do the trick. As the red pigment in the tomato sauce will neutralize the green copper pigment.
Tip 5. Salty Sea Water.
Salt in the sea water causes your hair to swell. Which in turn damages the cuticle. That is why your hair can feel rough and be difficult to comb. Always rinse the salt water out of your hair as soon as possible so as to reduce the damage.
Tip 6. Hair Color Care When Swimming.
To help protect your hair color when swimming in your swimming pool or in the ocean. It is important to remember that your hair is like a sponge. It will suck in water very quickly.
Before you enter the swimming pool or sea drench your hair under a shower. This will fill the hair shaft up. So less of the more damaging water can enter.
Otherwise coat your hair with some conditioner or a hair oil. This will act as a coating so help in protecting your hair.
Tip 7. Water And Sun Don’t Mix The Two.
Yes I know after a swim in the sea or pool there is nothing better than lazing around in the sun for a while. Unfortunately your hair color does not think so.
The rays of the sun will affect the hair even without color. With color the sun will increase the effects of the chemicals from the pool or the salt from the sea.
Be kind to your hair color and before you lay back and relax. Shampoo or if not rinse your hair under a shower to remove as much of the sea salt and chemicals as possible.
After spending the time in the hair salon to achieve your perfect color. Finding ways to keep that color looking fresh for as long as possible is a must.
I hope that these points will help you in protecting your hair and your hair color against the hazards of water.
